Disability Pride Flag Raises Awareness in Fitchburg City Hall

UPDATE: The Disability Pride Flag is now prominently displayed over Fitchburg City Hall, marking a significant celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Mayor Sam Squailia and community leaders raised the flag on July 22, 2023, just days before the official anniversary on July 26, recognizing this landmark legislation that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities.

This display is not just a flag; it symbolizes a commitment to equality and accessibility in public life, including jobs, education, and community spaces. Squailia shared images of the event on social media, emphasizing the importance of this flag, which was designed by Ann Magill. Each color stripe represents a facet of the disability community: red for physical disabilities, gold for neurodiversity, white for invisible disabilities, blue for emotional and psychiatric challenges, green for sensory disabilities, and a faded black background honoring victims of violence and abuse.

“This flag represents resilience, pride, and unity,” Squailia stated. “Fitchburg is proud to stand with the disability community, this week and every week, as we continue working toward a city that is accessible and inclusive for all.”

The community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive. Local resident Cristy Lee Potter Guy, who became legally blind before the ADA’s passage, shared her journey. “Experiencing high school and college in Fitchburg after the ADA was passed was an experience in recognition, progress, and acceptance. But there’s still work to be done,” she remarked.

In addition to the Disability Pride Flag, Fitchburg’s Heritage Park is adorned with flags from various countries, including Brazil, Canada, Finland, and Germany, symbolizing the city’s global connections. These flags, which were raised last month, are typically displayed from late spring until November or December, showcasing Fitchburg’s vibrant community spirit.

The city’s commitment to inclusivity continues, with Squailia highlighting the importance of these flags as “our community connection to the world.” The mayor’s initiative underscores the ongoing efforts to foster a welcoming environment for all residents, regardless of ability.

As the city prepares for the official ADA anniversary, residents are encouraged to reflect on the progress made and the work still necessary to ensure equality for everyone. This week, Fitchburg stands united, celebrating its diversity and the resilience of its community.

Stay tuned for further updates on how Fitchburg continues to champion accessibility and inclusion for all its citizens.
