Damian Lillard Returns to Blazers with $42 Million Contract

UPDATE: Damian Lillard is officially back with the Portland Trail Blazers, signing a three-year, $42 million contract that includes a no-trade clause. This significant move was confirmed just days ago, marking a heartfelt return for Lillard, who expressed joy at being “back home” with his family and the team he has long represented.

Driving home from the signing with his three children, Lillard reflected on the emotional significance of the moment. “Just knowing that I’m going to be back home… with my kids, playing for the Trail Blazers,” he said. “I wasn’t expecting it to happen so soon.” This statement highlights the personal impact of his return, underscoring his deep connection to Portland.

Lillard made his first public comments during a news conference on Monday night alongside Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and general manager Joe Cronin. The nine-time All-Star, who played for the Blazers for 11 seasons before a brief stint with the Milwaukee Bucks, is beloved in Portland, known for his clutch performances and signature “Dame Time” moments.

However, Lillard’s return comes with a cloud of uncertainty as he is currently recovering from a torn left Achilles tendon that he sustained during the playoffs. The injury required surgery and is expected to keep him sidelined for most, if not all, of the 2025-26 season. While he didn’t rule out a comeback this season, Cronin emphasized that the team would prioritize Lillard’s long-term health. “It’s going to be ultimately what’s best… to make sure that I’m right, that’s what I’ll do,” Lillard said.

During his last season in Portland, Lillard ranked 10th in the league in scoring with an average of 24.9 points per game, despite being limited to 58 games due to injuries. His remarkable performance included a career-high of 32.2 points per game and a historic achievement of scoring 71 points in a single game against the Houston Rockets, making him one of just seven players in NBA history to reach that milestone.

Lillard’s emotional journey home resonates not just with basketball fans but also with the community of Portland. Reflecting on his family’s understanding of the move, he recounted a touching moment with his daughter, who was relieved they wouldn’t have to travel to Milwaukee anymore.

As Lillard embarks on this new chapter, he brings a wealth of experience and leadership to a Blazers team focused on developing young talents like Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe. The team is gearing up for the upcoming season, and fans are eagerly watching how Lillard’s presence will shape their future.

The return of Lillard is not just a sports story; it is a narrative of homecoming, resilience, and hope. As the Blazers prepare for the season ahead, Lillard’s journey serves as an inspiration, reminding fans of the power of loyalty and community in sports.

Stay tuned for more updates on Lillard’s recovery and the upcoming Blazers season as this story continues to develop.
