URGENT UPDATE: Costco is ramping up its expansion efforts, planning to open 35 new warehouses this fiscal year, a significant increase from 27 last year. This strategic move, announced by CEO Ron Vachris, aims to alleviate crowding at busy locations and tap into new and existing markets.
In a fourth quarter earnings call held on October 5, 2023, Vachris emphasized the company’s focus on “significant opportunities for expansion, both domestically and internationally.” The first four openings are set for October in Fruitport, Michigan; Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; Indian Land, South Carolina; and a business center in Mississauga, Ontario.
Costco’s decision comes as its warehouses have seen a surge in customer traffic over recent years. The company’s approach involves strategically placing new stores near existing ones to “cannibalize” sales and ease the congestion at popular locations. CFO Gary Millerchip noted that the average warehouse in the U.S. is around 20 years old, making relocations a chance to refresh and upgrade services for members.
“In the U.S., where we open and we’re filling in markets, we see tremendously quick growth in sales,” Millerchip stated. This year’s plan includes five relocations of existing clubs, further enhancing Costco’s capacity in bustling areas.
The new openings are expected to provide numerous job opportunities, appealing to those seeking better-paying positions within the retail sector. Vachris highlighted that older warehouse locations could transform into Costco Business Centers, catering to larger-volume customers, which will help optimize delivery logistics.
As Costco accelerates its expansion, the impact on communities will be significant, providing consumers with more accessibility to the wholesale giant’s offerings while also enhancing employment prospects in the regions.
