UPDATE: A Chicago day-care worker has been released from custody after an outpouring of community support following her detention by immigration agents. Diana Santillana Galeano, an employee at the Rayito de Sol Spanish Immersion Early Learning Center, was apprehended on November 5, 2023, as children were being dropped off for the day.
Footage captured the intense moments as agents struggled with her at the center’s entrance. Her attorney, Charlie Wysong, confirmed that she was released from a detention facility in Indiana on Wednesday night. “We are thrilled that Ms. Santillana was released, and has been able to return home to Chicago where she belongs,” Wysong stated.
The community rallied around Santillana Galeano during her detention, emphasizing the emotional toll on both her and the children she teaches. “I am so grateful to everyone who has advocated on my behalf, and on behalf of the countless others who have experienced similar trauma over recent months in the Chicago area,” she said. “I love our community and the children I teach, and I can’t wait to see them again.”
The case highlights the aggressive immigration enforcement tactics under the Trump administration, with over 3,000 arrests in the Chicago area since early September alone. While the Department of Homeland Security stated that the day-care center was not specifically targeted, Santillana Galeano’s detention remains a shocking example of the current climate of immigration enforcement, especially in sensitive locations such as schools and day-care facilities.
Santillana Galeano entered the U.S. illegally in June 2023 but had received authorization to work under the Biden administration. Despite this, her recent detention raised significant concerns about the treatment of undocumented workers, particularly those in essential roles.
The community’s support has been crucial, demonstrating a strong commitment to advocacy and solidarity. Wysong has expressed gratitude for this support while underscoring the need for privacy as Santillana Galeano begins to recover from her ordeal.
As the situation unfolds, her legal team will continue to pursue her immigration claims, emphasizing the importance of stability for both her and the children she serves. The community remains vigilant, watching for further developments in immigration policy and enforcement practices that impact vulnerable individuals like Santillana Galeano.
