Celebrity Chef Tyler Florence Returns to Traverse City for Festival

UPDATE: Celebrity chef and Food Network star Tyler Florence is in Traverse City, Michigan, this week, headlining the Traverse City Food and Wine Festival. Florence’s appearance is generating excitement as he reunites with the region he first visited over three decades ago during his culinary training.

Florence, the host of the popular show “The Great Food Truck Race,” is currently celebrating the show’s 18th season, featuring Detroit’s own Quiana “Que” Rice and her team. His presence at the festival marks a significant return to Traverse City, having previously interned at the Grand Traverse Resort more than 35 years ago.

During a cooking demonstration on August 22, 2023, Florence reflected on his time in Traverse City. “I flew out and lived at a farmhouse for three months and had a great time,” he said, reminiscing about the early days of his career.

In a candid interview, he shared memorable experiences, including the challenges of commuting to work in harsh winter conditions. “I would have to be at the hotel at 4:45 AM. And it’s snowing and I didn’t have a car. I would walk a mile to the hotel in the snow,” he recalled.

Florence worked in the resort’s meat butchery program, honing his skills in butchering and sausage-making. “I learned the art of butchering things and how to scale up a butchery program,” he explained, noting the unique culinary environment that inspired creativity.

As a headliner at the festival, Florence expressed his enthusiasm to return to the area. “It just felt like something that it was immediate yes,” he remarked. “You don’t always have an opportunity to go back and visit someplace where you went to college, and this is a fun place to come back to.”

Florence also shared insights on current food trends, highlighting a shift towards live-fire cooking. “Kitchens are starting to get completely rebuilt with zero gas appliances, all open fire,” he noted. He emphasized the “romanticism” of cooking over flames, which enhances flavors and textures.

Florence’s return to Traverse City not only celebrates his culinary journey but also serves as an inspiring reminder of the transformative power of food and community. As he engages with attendees at the festival, the chef continues to influence both novice cooks and seasoned professionals alike.

Stay tuned for more updates from the Traverse City Food and Wine Festival as Tyler Florence brings his unique culinary perspective to the stage.
