Brock Purdy Set for Aggressive Practice, Eyes Sunday Start

UPDATE: Brock Purdy is gearing up for an aggressive practice today, aiming to reclaim his starting position for the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. After a challenging recovery from a toe injury sustained in Week 4, Purdy’s increased practice intensity signals a significant step towards his return to the field.

Head Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the urgency of Purdy’s situation, stating, “If he takes a big step forward this week, like he did last week, then he should have a good chance to play.” Purdy, who has not started a game since his injury, is determined to help the 49ers improve their current standing.

Purdy initially injured his toe in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks and missed the subsequent two games. Despite his limited participation over the past three weeks, he is now expected to carry a heavier workload, with the goal of being fully ready for Sunday’s match. His presence could be crucial as the 49ers look to boost their performance following a series of setbacks.

In Purdy’s absence, Mac Jones has stepped in as the starting quarterback, leading the team to a 5-3 record while averaging 268.9 yards passing per game, ranking second in the NFL among qualifiers. However, the 49ers believe that a healthy Purdy gives them the best chance of success, particularly after his impressive rookie season where he led the team to the NFC Championship game and was a Super Bowl finalist.

Purdy’s statistics speak volumes: a career passer rating of 103.7, with an average of 8.8 yards per attempt, 68 touchdown passes, and 31 interceptions. His teammates are optimistic about his return, with running back Christian McCaffrey stating, “He looks like Brock. He’s throwing well. He’s running well. He looks good.”

In addition to Purdy’s potential comeback, the 49ers could also welcome back receiver Ricky Pearsall, who has been sidelined for six games due to a knee injury. Pearsall was limited in practice today but is on track to play Sunday. As a first-round draft pick in 2024, his return could add significant depth to the team’s offense.

Rookie defensive tackle Alfred Collins is also slated to be limited in practice after missing last week’s game with a hip injury, further complicating the 49ers’ lineup.

As the team prepares for this critical game, all eyes will be on Purdy’s progress in practice today. The developments could reshape the 49ers’ strategy heading into the matchup against Arizona, making this weekend’s game a must-watch for fans and analysts alike.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story unfolds and the 49ers finalize their roster for Sunday.
