UPDATE: The new Boca Grande History Center officially opens its doors with the highly anticipated Footprints from the Past Exhibition, just in time for the community to celebrate. Former Historical Society President Pam Heilman expressed her emotional response upon first entering the new space at the Crowninshield Community House, stating, “I walked in quietly and I cried.”
This transformative project aims to provide a much-needed showcase for the island’s rich history, after years of operating in a cramped space behind Boca Bargains. “The island deserves this,” Heilman added, underscoring the significance of the new facility.
The History Center’s board gathered for a preview on Tuesday night, confirming that all exhibits, including an interactive map of the island, are fully operational ahead of a series of openings leading to the grand event set for next week.
The exhibition has been brought to life by Creative Arts Unlimited, a design firm recognized for its historic projects. CEO Chuck Stanmore emphasized the project’s importance, saying, “We are storytellers. We need to know what the story is.” This initiative, which took just over a year to complete, reflects a collaborative effort between the Historical Society’s staff and volunteers, who played pivotal roles in selecting the narratives and visuals for the exhibits.
The new exhibition space promises to engage visitors of all backgrounds, as Stanmore noted, “You can’t write it for PhDs.” Historical Society President Johns Knight revealed that they chose Creative Arts Unlimited after a thorough search, appreciating the firm’s commitment to understanding Boca Grande’s unique circumstances.
Due to disruptions caused by hurricanes, exhibit pieces were stored safely until the final assembly, which Knight reported was “built in the shop.” He commended the extra effort by the team, highlighting the strong partnership that has developed throughout the project.
The grand opening is set for next week, and the community is eagerly anticipating the opportunity to explore the new exhibits that celebrate Boca Grande’s heritage. Visitors can expect to dive deep into the history that shapes the island, with engaging displays designed to captivate and educate.
