Pennsylvania’s Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has initiated the resurfacing of state Route 93, also known as Broad Street, from 15th Street in West Hazleton to the boundary between Carbon and Luzerne counties. The project, which has a total budget of $3,796,370, is anticipated to be completed by November 2025, according to PennDOT’s PA projects construction map.
Rich Roman, the PennDOT District 4 Executive, confirmed that while there will be no detours during this project, motorists should expect some lane restrictions. “We’re milling the existing pavement surface, putting back new asphalt, and making drainage repairs, pipe replacements, and resurfacing the roadway,” Roman stated.
Project Details and Timeline
The resurfacing work is contracted to Pennsy Supply, based in Harrisburg, and will be financed through transportation funding. Crews are set to begin resurfacing state Route 93 from the Banks Township line to Poplar Street in Hazleton on August 26, 2025. According to Roman, “Paving should be done this season; everything is weather-dependent.”
Current updates indicate that work has commenced with the milling of the existing surface, progressing from the Carbon County line toward the project’s endpoint. This resurfacing project is a continuation of previous work completed several years ago, which extended from 15th Street in West Hazleton into Sugarloaf Township.
Impact on Local Traffic
Throughout the duration of the project, the roads will maintain their existing configuration, with no additional lanes or roadway expansions planned. As such, local residents and commuters should prepare for potential delays due to the lane restrictions, but no significant detours are expected.
The resurfacing of state Route 93 represents a vital investment in local infrastructure, improving safety and driving conditions for the thousands of vehicles that traverse this busy route daily. PennDOT aims to ensure that the work proceeds efficiently and with minimal disruption to the community.
