Indie Developer Shares Demo of Unfinished Paper Mario-Inspired Game

In an unexpected move, indie developer Adam Gryu has released a demo of his unfinished game, Untitled Paper RPG, which draws inspiration from the beloved Paper Mario series. Despite the project being on indefinite hold, Gryu decided to share the demo on Itch.io, offering a rare glimpse into a game that might never see full release.

The decision to release the demo comes after Gryu’s successful launch of A Short Hike, a cozy hiking game that captured the hearts of players worldwide. Originally, Gryu began developing the RPG following Nintendo’s announcement of Paper Mario: Color Splash in 2016. However, by 2018, the project took a backseat as Gryu focused on A Short Hike, which subsequently became a hit.

From Inspiration to Indefinite Hold

According to Gryu, the development of the Untitled Paper RPG became increasingly challenging, leading to its indefinite hiatus. “After releasing A Short Hike and working on the subsequent updates and ports… I didn’t really want to go back to this game?” Gryu explained in a post on Itch.io. The RPG’s large scope, lack of a compelling story, and unengaging turn-based combat contributed to Gryu’s decision to pause development.

“In general, I started to lose the joy that I felt working on it,” Gryu admitted, highlighting the emotional toll of the project.

A Glimpse into the Unfinished

The demo, which Gryu describes as both a source of pride and embarrassment, offers one to two hours of gameplay. It features art and characters developed in collaboration with other creators. Gryu believes that sharing the demo is a better option than leaving the project entirely unseen. “I figured sharing the demo is better than nothing,” he wrote, giving fans and fellow developers a chance to experience his work.

While Gryu considers the RPG “sort of” cancelled, he remains active in the gaming community. He continues to update his pumpkin carving MMO, Ghost Town Pumpkin Festival, and is exploring new projects, although he is uncertain which one will reach completion next.

The Broader Context of Indie Game Development

The release of the demo highlights a broader trend in the indie game industry, where developers often grapple with the challenges of scope and personal fulfillment. Gryu’s experience is not unique; many indie developers face similar hurdles, balancing creativity with practical constraints. The decision to share unfinished work can be seen as a way to engage with the community and gather feedback, even if the project may never be completed.

Industry experts note that unfinished demos can serve as valuable learning tools for both developers and players. They provide insight into the game development process, showcasing the iterative nature of creating interactive experiences. This transparency can foster a deeper appreciation for the complexities involved in game design.

Looking Ahead

As Gryu continues to navigate his creative journey, the release of the Untitled Paper RPG demo stands as a testament to the evolving nature of game development. It reflects a willingness to embrace uncertainty and share the creative process with the community. Whether or not Gryu returns to the RPG, his openness offers a unique opportunity for players to engage with a project that might otherwise have remained hidden.

For those interested in experiencing the demo, it remains available on Itch.io, providing a brief but intriguing look at a game that blends nostalgia with innovation. As the indie game scene continues to grow, Gryu’s decision may inspire other developers to share their unfinished projects, enriching the gaming landscape with diverse and unexpected experiences.
