Anthropic has announced a significant upgrade to its AI model, Claude Sonnet 4, which now supports an impressive one million context tokens. This enhancement allows the model to manage larger and more complex tasks, offering developers new opportunities for advanced applications in coding and data analysis.
The upgrade, revealed on October 3, 2023, marks a notable increase from the previous limit of 200,000 tokens. With this expanded context window, Claude Sonnet 4 can now handle substantial codebases exceeding 75,000 lines of code or synthesize multiple research papers within a single API request. This capability is particularly beneficial for developers engaged in data-intensive projects, such as large-scale code analysis and document synthesis, as well as for creating context-aware agents that require extensive material to navigate complex workflows.
Enhanced Performance and Availability
Anthropic describes Claude Sonnet as a “hybrid reasoning model with superior intelligence.” Internal testing conducted by ZDNET has shown that Claude Sonnet 4 performs impressively, even surpassing the company’s earlier advanced coding model, Opus 4. Notably, Sonnet successfully passed all four coding tests, while Opus 4 fell short on two.
Developers can access the upgraded Claude Sonnet 4 in a public beta through the Anthropic API, available to customers with Tier 4 and custom rate limits. Additionally, the model is accessible on third-party cloud platforms, starting with Amazon Bedrock, with plans to expand to Google Cloud’s Vertex AI soon. However, API pricing will increase for prompts exceeding 200,000 tokens, reflecting the enhanced capabilities of the model.
Growing Momentum for Anthropic
Since the launch of the Claude 4 models in May 2025, Anthropic has experienced consistent growth in its business operations. The company reports a remarkable 17-fold increase in year-over-year B2B run-rate revenue as of June 2025. This upward trend is bolstered by the popularity of Claude Code, a coding assistant that integrates directly into developers’ workspaces to streamline code writing and management. In the past month alone, Claude Code has introduced ten new features, alongside the recent release of the highly anticipated Opus 4.1.
As the demand for AI-driven coding solutions continues to rise, developers are encouraged to explore the capabilities of Claude Sonnet 4, which promises to enhance productivity and efficiency in programming tasks. The advancements made by Anthropic signal a significant step forward in the evolution of AI models, providing users with tools that can handle increasingly complex challenges.
