A recent report highlights that 80% of gamers in the UK and the U.S. have encountered cheating while playing online games. The study, conducted by PlaySafe ID, surveyed over 2,000 players in both countries and revealed significant repercussions for gaming experiences and developer revenues.
The findings indicate that 42% of respondents have quit a game due to the presence of cheaters. Additionally, 55%83% of gamers expressed a greater likelihood of playing a title advertised as “cheater-free.” Furthermore, 73% indicated they would be willing to verify their identities to ensure a cheating-free experience. This willingness suggests that players are not only aware of the cheating problem but are also eager to contribute to potential solutions.
The report also found that an overwhelming 79% of respondents believe that individuals identified as cheaters should face penalties across multiple games. This sentiment reflects a strong desire among gamers for accountability within the gaming community.
Andrew Wailes, founder and CEO of PlaySafe ID, commented on the findings, stating, “I hate cheating in video games; it’s a serious issue that undermines player trust and directly impacts developer revenues.” He emphasized the importance of addressing this issue, noting that gamers are ready to engage in efforts to combat cheating. “From looking at our data, it’s clear that gamers agree and that they are not only aware of the problem, but they’re ready to be part of the solution,” Wailes added.
As the gaming industry continues to grow, the responsibility to tackle cheating now lies with studios and developers. There is an increasing demand for robust, effective, and transparent measures to ensure fair play. The data from this report serves as a critical reminder of the need for action, not only to protect the integrity of gaming but also to safeguard the financial health of game developers.
