An impressive performance on November 4, 2023, saw the Utah State Aggies decisively defeat the Nevada Wolf Pack with a final score of **51-14**. This victory marks a significant rebound for Utah State, as they showed dominance right from the start, scoring on their first three offensive drives and establishing a commanding **24-0** lead in the first quarter.
The Aggies, under the leadership of head coach Bronco Mendenhall, executed their game plan effectively. Mendenhall remarked, “I didn’t see that score coming. Nevada’s been really good on defense. They’ve played one-score games regardless of who they’ve played all year long.” The team’s preparation paid off, as they displayed physicality and cohesion throughout the game, a stark contrast to their previous **33-14** loss against New Mexico.
Utah State’s offense was particularly effective, scoring on seven of their first eight drives. Quarterback Bryson Barnes had an outstanding game, completing **74%** of his passes for **288 yards** and three touchdowns. He demonstrated resilience under pressure, escaping potential sacks and extending plays. Wide receiver Brady Boyd shone brightly, achieving a career-high **117 receiving yards** on five catches, including two touchdown receptions. Boyd emphasized the team’s focus on starting strong, stating, “We’ve kind of started slow the past couple of weeks, so it was a big emphasis to come out and start fast.”
Special teams also contributed significantly, with kicker Tanner Rinker successfully converting three field goals. Rinker is now a perfect **10 for 10** this season, with five of those field goals coming from distances over **40 yards**.
Defensively, Utah State was equally impressive. The unit recorded four sacks, seven tackles for loss, two interceptions, and a fumble recovery. Brevin Hamblin was a standout performer, amassing eight tackles, a sack, and an interception returned for a touchdown. Hamblin reflected on the team’s performance, saying, “I feel like with everyone around me making plays together, it was natural for everyone.”
The Wolf Pack struggled offensively, with starting quarterback Carter Jones managing to complete only one pass in the first half. By halftime, Utah State had built a commanding **41-0** lead, outgaining Nevada in total yards **335** to **47**, and limiting the Wolf Pack to **-1** passing yards.
As the game progressed, Mendenhall opted to rest most of his starters, allowing reserves to gain valuable experience. Although Nevada managed to score two touchdowns in the second half, their efforts merely matched their season average of **14 points** per game.
Looking ahead, Utah State’s victory leaves them with a record of **5-4** and just one win away from bowl eligibility. However, the path is challenging, with their remaining opponents being UNLV, Fresno State on the road, and a home match against Boise State. If the Aggies wish to secure a bowl game in Mendenhall’s inaugural season, they will need to build on this strong performance and remain focused as the regular season draws to a close.
