The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) has officially sanctioned boys volleyball as a high school sport, effective from spring 2026. This decision was made during the Delegate Assembly meeting held in Wilsonville, Oregon, on October 6, 2025. Over the past two years, boys volleyball had been classified as an “emerging activity,” allowing for assessment of its viability based on participation levels and growth.
Last spring, a total of **68 teams** from more than **70 schools** across Oregon actively participated in boys volleyball, demonstrating significant interest and engagement in the sport. This marks the first time since **2023**, when girls wrestling was added, that OSAA has introduced a new sanctioned sport.
In Central Oregon, only three schools—**Summit High School**, **Crook County High School**, and **Central Christian High School**—fielded boys volleyball teams last spring. Notably, Summit High School clinched the **5A title**, while Crook County reached the **4A title game**, finishing as runners-up.
During the same meeting, the delegate assembly also discussed the possibility of adding boys and girls lacrosse as emerging activities. However, this proposal did not receive approval.
The addition of boys volleyball to the OSAA’s list of sanctioned sports is expected to enhance the athletic landscape for high school students in Oregon, providing more opportunities for young athletes to compete and develop their skills in this dynamic sport.
This development is part of a broader trend towards recognizing and expanding participation in various sports within the state’s high school programs. The emphasis on fostering an inclusive athletic environment aligns with the OSAA’s mission to promote student engagement through sports.
