Approximately a dozen seniors gathered at the Lutz Senior Center to participate in a chess tournament, inaugurating National Senior Center Month. This annual event, organized by Hillsborough County Aging Services, aims to foster community and mental engagement among seniors. In addition to chess, the tournament series will also feature billiards and Rummikub, providing diverse opportunities for strategic play.
The atmosphere at the center was lively despite the overcast weather. Art Matteau, an 89-year-old chess enthusiast and volunteer, set the stage by outlining the tournament rules. Before the matches began, attendees were treated to an energetic performance from the center’s cheer squad, which consists of senior women in matching outfits. Their spirited chants energized the room, as reported by Hillsborough County’s newsroom.
Matteau, who has been passionate about chess since childhood, emphasizes its mental benefits. “Playing chess and staying social gets the mind going,” he stated. His comments highlight the importance of such events for seniors, combining mental exercise with social interaction.
The festivities extend beyond chess, as the senior centers will host several additional tournaments through September. Highlighting the month’s celebrations, a Hispanic Heritage Celebration is set for September 25, 2023, at The Regent. This event will feature music, dancing, and various aspects of Latin culture in recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Organizers expect over 400 active adults aged 50 and older to participate, showcasing the cultural vibrancy within the Hillsborough County community.
Hillsborough County Aging Services plays a pivotal role in senior engagement throughout the year. With programs available at seven senior centers and 14 dining and activity locations, it serves as a hub for social connection. For seniors in Lutz and surrounding areas, each chess move, dice roll, and social gathering embodies a celebration of community and resilience.
