Lakers Eye Trade for Marcus Smart to Bolster Defense

The Los Angeles Lakers are actively pursuing a trade to strengthen their roster, focusing on acquiring Marcus Smart, the 2021-22 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Following recent signings, including Deandre Ayton and Jake LaRavia, both of whom received two-year contracts, the Lakers are turning their attention to enhancing their defensive capabilities.

According to NBA writer Jake Weinbach, a potential trade scenario involves the Lakers sending Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kleber, a second-round draft pick in 2032, and cash considerations to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Smart. This proposed move aims to address the Lakers’ clear need for a point of attack wing defender.

Smart has faced injury challenges in recent seasons, appearing in only 54 games over the past two years. Despite these setbacks, he remains one of the league’s premier wing defenders when healthy. His addition would significantly bolster the Lakers’ defensive presence, particularly on the perimeter, where they have struggled.

Currently, the Lakers feature a strong offensive backcourt with Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. However, their defensive lineup requires reinforcement, as key players like LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, and Ayton are not recognized for their defensive prowess.

Washington, on the other hand, may be motivated to facilitate Smart’s move to a contender, especially given his potential for a buyout. While the Wizards may not have significant interest in Vincent or Kleber, both players are on expiring contracts and could be re-routed to other teams, enhancing their trade value.

As the Lakers look to balance their roster with both offensive talent and defensive strength, acquiring Smart would represent a strategic step forward. The ongoing negotiations underscore the dynamic nature of the NBA offseason, as teams seek to build competitive lineups ahead of the upcoming season.
