The Bishop Shanahan Eagles showcased their offensive prowess on September 29, 2023, defeating the West Chester Henderson Warriors 49-14 at Jack Mancini Field. Key performances from senior players Aidan Civitella and quarterback Anthony Aquila propelled the Eagles to their fifth victory of the season, improving their record to 5-1.
Civitella set the tone early in the game with an impressive 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, igniting the home crowd. He continued to shine, adding another 83-yard kickoff return in the second quarter, along with a touchdown reception and an interception. “I just have to credit my blockers on the two kick returns,” Civitella said. “They did a great job, and I was untouched to the end zone on both of them. It was a real momentum boost to start the game like that.”
Aquila, demonstrating versatility, contributed significantly with three rushing touchdowns and two touchdown passes. His first touchdown run came shortly after Civitella’s opening score, a 21-yard dash that extended the Eagles’ lead to 14-0. Aquila acknowledged his teammates’ efforts, stating, “Aidan really gave us the momentum with the kickoff return at the start of the game. And my receivers made me look good.”
Henderson responded with a touchdown of their own, as quarterback Jason Cherup connected with Ryan Turse for a 13-yard score. Turse had a standout night, catching nine passes for significant yardage. However, Cherup’s performance was marred by three interceptions, which hindered the Warriors’ efforts to build offensive momentum. He completed 19 of 31 passes for 204 yards and one touchdown.
Following Turse’s score, Civitella struck back with another electrifying kickoff return, this time covering 83 yards to make it 21-7. The Eagles capitalized on a short Henderson possession, with Aquila throwing a 65-yard touchdown pass to Owen McGrory, widening the gap to 28-7 by halftime.
In the second half, the Warriors opened with a strong drive, with Cherup finding both Chase Kearney and Turse to advance deep into Eagles’ territory. Cherup managed a 10-yard touchdown run, narrowing the score to 28-14. However, the Eagles’ defense held firm, with Jason Guerin intercepting a pass in the end zone to halt Henderson’s momentum.
Eagles’ head coach Paul Meyers praised Guerin’s pivotal play, noting, “If they score right there it is a 28-21 game, and they have all the momentum.”
Aquila sealed the game with two more touchdown runs in the fourth quarter, one following a blocked punt that set the Eagles up at the Henderson five-yard line. The Eagles’ dominance forced the mercy rule into effect for the final nine minutes of play.
Meyers highlighted the team’s preparation, stating, “We saw something on film this week where we thought we could do something on the kickoff. And credit to Aidan. He is a special player with great speed and he got us going tonight.”
The final score reflected the Eagles’ control over the game, with Bishop Shanahan totaling 283 yards of offense compared to Henderson’s 255 yards. The Eagles outperformed in rushing yards, gaining 131 yards compared to the Warriors’ 51 yards.
This victory not only showcased the talent within the Bishop Shanahan roster but also set the stage for future matchups as they aim to continue their successful season.
