The 2025-26 NBA season has marked a significant shift in how basketball is covered. With TNT losing its rights to broadcast games, Amazon Prime and NBC have stepped in as the new broadcasters. While fans have been relieved to retain the popular show Inside the NBA, which has now moved to ESPN, former player and analyst Charles Barkley has voiced strong criticism regarding TNT’s handling of the situation.
Barkley, alongside fellow panelists Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and host Ernie Johnson, has been particularly vocal about his dissatisfaction with how the transition was managed. Once a staunch supporter of TNT, Barkley’s tone has shifted dramatically. He expressed his frustration during an appearance on the podcast Pardon My Take, stating that the network’s leadership failed to communicate effectively with its staff regarding the future of the NBA broadcasts.
The situation became evident when Barkley recounted a moment during the playoffs when he and his coworkers were left in the dark. “I thought at TNT, our bosses did a s***** job,” Barkley said, recalling how they had to rely on the internet to learn about potential job losses. He emphasized the need for transparency, saying, “Just shoot us straight. These are real people.” Barkley noted that while he and his colleagues are financially secure, many other crew members depend on the stability of Inside the NBA for their livelihoods.
Barkley highlighted that the management at TNT did not approach their staff with the respect and honesty they deserved. “TNT never came to us like grown folks and said, ‘Hey guys, we’re probably going to lose the NBA,’ which we could’ve understood,” he added. The network faced significant financial pressures, reportedly paying between $1.2 billion and $2.5 billion annually for NBA broadcasting rights over an 11-year period. This massive expenditure contributed to the decision to relinquish broadcasting rights.
Despite the transition, ESPN has managed to maintain the essence of Inside the NBA. The show has kept its original studio, theme, and crew intact, allowing for a seamless continuation of the beloved program. Barkley’s criticisms stand as a reminder of the importance of communication and transparency within organizations, especially during significant changes that affect employees’ careers.
As the NBA season progresses under new broadcast arrangements, the impact of these changes will continue to resonate through the sports community. Barkley’s candid remarks may encourage other networks to prioritize open dialogues with their staff, ensuring that all involved feel respected and informed during times of transition.
