Bad Weather Interrupts Wyndham Championship as Rai Eyes Ryder Cup

Bad weather disrupted the second round of the Wyndham Championship, leaving defending champion Aaron Rai just one shot off the lead. The tournament, held at the Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina, saw lightning force players off the course after Rai had started strong with a score of seven-under 63. At the time of the suspension, Cameron Young of the United States was leading at 14 under.

Rai demonstrated his skills early on, collecting six birdies before the weather halted play. He began the round with three consecutive birdies, added another at the fifth hole, and secured two more after making the turn. His performance highlights his ambition as he seeks to defend his title, having won his first PGA Tour event at this location a year ago.

Young, who also made a remarkable start with an opening round of 63, recorded five birdies on the front nine. He expressed his focus on a larger goal, stating, “For me it’s not necessarily about this week. I’ve got a goal. In the middle of September, I’d like to be in New York playing on that Ryder Cup team.” Young’s mindset reflects his determination to achieve significant milestones over the next few weeks, prioritizing long-term aspirations over immediate tournament outcomes.

As the weather paused play, both Mac Meissner and Sungjae Im positioned themselves well in the clubhouse, each finishing with scores of 12 under par. Meissner matched Young’s performance with a seven-under 63, while Im recorded a six-under 64.

When play resumes on Saturday morning, Young will continue from the edge of the 16th green, aiming for a third consecutive birdie. Overnight leader Joel Dahmen remained in contention, sitting at nine under after mixing two birdies with two bogeys, as he vies for a top 70 position in the FedEx Cup rankings.

Among those looking to secure a place in the play-offs is Gary Woodland, who bolstered his chances with an impressive albatross on the par-five fifth hole, finishing with a round of 64 to tie with Dahmen.

Fans can watch the live coverage of the Wyndham Championship as it continues, with the second round resuming on Saturday at 19:00 GMT.
