Stunning Images Shine in 2025 Capture the Dark Photography Contest

The 2025 Capture the Dark photography contest showcased remarkable talent, featuring over 2,220 entries from photographers across 22 countries. The competition, organized by DarkSky International, aims to raise awareness about light pollution and its impact on the environment. Photographers captured stunning images of the night sky, highlighting both the beauty and fragility of our celestial surroundings.

One of the standout moments came from photographer JJ Rao, who secured first place with a breathtaking photograph of a red sprite above Derby, Australia. Astronaut Nichole “Vapor” Ayers described the phenomenon as “Wow. Just wow,” reflecting on the rarity and fleeting nature of these atmospheric events. Rao expressed his excitement on Instagram, stating, “I’ve read and heard about Red Sprites for a few years now… this monster captured last night was very naked eye visible, and very red.”

Celebrating Nighttime Imagery

The contest included awards in 11 categories, with a panel of esteemed astrophotographers judging entries based on composition, technical skill, and adherence to the principles of responsible astrophotography. One notable entry was “Gems of Jizerka,” which won first place in the Young Astrophotographers category. Photographer Oldřich Špurek described the valley of Jizerka as a transformative location, capturing the serene atmosphere under the stars.

In addition to the stunning visuals, the contest aims to address the growing issue of light pollution, which is increasing at an alarming rate of nearly 10% annually worldwide. DarkSky International emphasized the need for awareness, stating that light pollution disrupts wildlife ecosystems and diminishes our ability to view the stars clearly.

Highlighting Global Talent

Among the many impressive submissions, several photographs stood out in various categories. “Two Lovers Watching The Moonrise” by Kevin O’Donnell earned second place in the Visit Tucson Location Award category. “Paris, Asleep In The Pre-Dawn Hours,” captured by Gwenael Blanck, won first place in the Dark Sky Friendly Lighting and Design category. Blanck took advantage of the darker skies after midnight, showcasing the beauty of the Pleiades above Paris.

Other notable images included “Starlight Highway” by Tom Rae, which received first place in the International Dark Sky Places category, and “Celestial Dance Over Lupine Fields” by Lucy Yunxi, which placed third in the same category. Each submission reflects not only technical skill but also a deep appreciation for the night sky.

The contest serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our celestial environment. As light pollution continues to rise, initiatives like the Capture the Dark photography contest play a crucial role in fostering a greater understanding of our universe and the need for responsible practices.
