The West Texas A&M University Ranch Horse Team kicked off its season with a significant victory at the Aggieland Classic, held from September 25 to 28, 2023, in Bryan, Texas. This win marks the team’s first step towards their goal of defending their national championship title. Among the competitors was Kaylea Marionneaux, a freshman majoring in agricultural business and economics from Zachary.
Under the leadership of Lance Baker, a professor of animal science and head coach of the ranch horse team, the team delivered impressive individual performances. Baker expressed satisfaction with the outcomes, stating, “I was really pleased with the individual performances at our first show of the year. We noted some areas that we need to improve on and will work on those at our next show as we get ready for our World Championship in Abilene at the end of the month.”
In addition to Marionneaux, several other students also achieved notable placements. Marin McCarthy, a freshman agribusiness major from Fort Worth, secured the championship in the limited non-pro category. Furthermore, Haylee Triplitt, a senior agribusiness major from Gouldbusk, finished in sixth place, while Lela Chisholm, a freshman agribusiness major from Graham, took eighth.
The team’s recent performance builds on a strong legacy, as they captured their first Division 1 national championship at the NIRSHA’s Collegiate National Championship Show in Amarillo last April. Furthermore, in November 2023, they celebrated their first Division 1 world championship title at the Stock Horse of Texas World Championship in Abilene.
As the season progresses, the ranch horse team is focused on refining their skills and strategies in anticipation of upcoming competitions. With the World Championship approaching, the athletes are determined to build on their early success and enhance their performance in the weeks ahead.
