President Donald Trump and former adviser Steve Bannon have sparked speculation about a potential third term for Trump, a notion dismissed as mere trolling by journalist Jonathan Karl. During an appearance on the morning show “Morning Joe,” aired by MS NOW, Karl discussed Trump’s intentions regarding his political future and the implications for fellow Republicans, particularly JD Vance.
Karl, who is also the author of the book Retribution: Donald Trump and the Campaign That Changed America, expressed skepticism about the seriousness of Trump’s repeated mentions of a 2028 campaign. He noted, “I do think that the reason why he keeps bringing up Trump 2028 — he’s got the hats he shows everybody. It is absolutely trolling.” According to Karl, Bannon, who has been instrumental in promoting this narrative, is not only teasing Trump’s critics but also sending a message to Vance, a Republican candidate who has been positioning himself for future leadership.
Despite being constitutionally prohibited from seeking a third term, Trump has entertained the idea of continuing his political career well into his 80s. This strategy, as per Karl’s analysis, serves to delay the ambitions of other Republican hopefuls. “At what point does he actually make it clear, ‘No, I’m not running, and it’s one of these guys, or it’s that guy,’ and now all the attention shifts?” he questioned, highlighting the challenges faced by emerging leaders within the party.
Karl drew parallels to his experiences covering the Obama White House, emphasizing the significance of being a lame duck. “You know what it’s like in 2015, 2016, when you’re a lame duck, nobody pays any attention.” He further added, “I don’t know how he voluntarily passes the baton,” indicating that Trump’s current focus may not be on stepping aside for new candidates.
The commentary from Karl sheds light on the ongoing dynamics within the Republican Party as it navigates its leadership landscape. With Trump’s continued prominence, the path for candidates like Vance remains uncertain, raising questions about the future direction of the party as it approaches the upcoming election cycle.
As the political landscape evolves, observers will be keenly watching how Trump’s playful references to a third term impact the ambitions of other Republican figures and the broader narrative leading into the next presidential election.
