Local Attorney William C. Geary Passes Away at 96

William C. Geary, a respected attorney and beloved family man, died peacefully at home on November 17, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 96 years old. Geary, known for his dedication to both his profession and his loved ones, was the husband of the late Nancy Kelley Geary, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage until her passing in 2014.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on May 25, 1929, Geary was the son of the late Catherine E. Delehanty Geary and former Lowell Mayor and Massachusetts State Senator William C. Geary. Growing up in the Acre neighborhood, he was enriched by a strong family network and lifelong friendships. His early education took place at St. Patrick School and Keith Academy.

Geary served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948, stationed in Korea during the occupation. His military service earned him the WWII Victory Medal. After returning home, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature, followed by a law degree from the New England School of Law.

Geary began his legal career as the First Assistant District Attorney for Middlesex County before co-founding the law firm Geary & Geary with his late brother, Eugene R. Geary. He gained a reputation as a seasoned trial attorney, particularly in eminent domain cases, and was a well-respected figure in the legal community.

A Life of Community and Family Engagement

Beyond his legal pursuits, Geary was deeply involved in local politics, serving as the Chairman of the Democratic City Committee. His admiration for President Abraham Lincoln was evident in his office, where a portrait of Lincoln was prominently displayed throughout his career.

Geary’s commitment to family was paramount. He actively participated in the lives of his six children and numerous grandchildren, providing guidance and support. He is survived by five of his children: William C. Geary III, Catherine M. Geary, Stephen B. Geary, John C. Geary, and Nancy Geary Funaro, along with ten grandchildren and six great-grandsons. His late son, Joseph P. Geary, passed away in 1986.

An avid golfer, Geary was known for his fast pace of play and held memberships at the Andover Country Club and Longmeadow Golf Club. He cherished memorable moments on the golf course, including a round where a bald eagle flew overhead on his birthday.

In addition to his love for sports, particularly local teams like the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, Geary was a dedicated fan of Notre Dame football. He often traveled to South Bend with family to cheer on the Fighting Irish.

Final Arrangements and Legacy

Geary is remembered fondly by a wide circle of friends, relatives, and colleagues. His sense of humor and zest for life left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects on November 24, 2025, at St. Patrick’s Church in Lowell, where calling hours will be held from 9:30 to 11:15 A.M., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 A.M. Committal services will take place privately for the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Geary’s memory to the St. Patrick School or the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lowell. Arrangements are being handled by the O’Donnell Funeral Home in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Geary’s legacy as a devoted family man, accomplished attorney, and active community member will be cherished by many.
