The Beltrami County Historical Society has rescheduled its public panel titled “Women Elected to Lead: Voices from Local Government” to take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2024. Originally set for June 21, the event was postponed due to the derecho that affected Bemidji. This panel aims to highlight the significant roles women have played in shaping local governance in Beltrami County.
Panel Highlights Local Leadership
Moderated by local historian Lois Jenkins, the panel will feature three prominent women who have made impactful contributions in public office. Jenkins will provide historical context on the accomplishments of women elected to office in the region.
The first panelist, Rita Albrecht, served four terms as mayor of Bemidji, beginning her tenure in 2012. Known for her advocacy in sustainable land use and public engagement, Albrecht previously held a seat on the Bemidji City Council. In 2021, she was appointed co-chair of the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources.
Another key speaker will be Gwenia Fiskevold-Gould, who currently represents the Bemidji City Council. Fiskevold-Gould has actively participated in discussions focusing on community infrastructure, business development, and neighborhood engagement.
The panel will also include Elaine Fleming, who made history in 2003 as the first female and first Ojibwe mayor of Cass Lake, serving two terms in office. Apart from her political career, Fleming is a professor at Leech Lake Tribal College and hosts the radio program “History of Leech Lake,” where she also advocates for environmental issues and oral history preservation.
Exploring Civic Participation
During the discussion, panelists will delve into the challenges, responsibilities, and rewards associated with local leadership. They will emphasize the importance of civic participation and representation in government, a theme that resonates with contemporary audiences.
The event is free and open to the public, although seating is limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested in attending can find additional information on the Historical Society’s website, beltramihistory.org, or may contact them directly at (218) 444-3376 or via email at [email protected].
This panel serves as part of an ongoing effort by the Beltrami County Historical Society to recognize and celebrate the contributions of women in local governance, reinforcing their vital role in shaping the community’s future.
