On August 1, 2025, Elizabeth “Beth” Younger Burford passed away peacefully at the age of 97, surrounded by her loving family. Known for her dedication to both her family and community, Beth’s life journey began on August 31, 1927, in Madison County, Virginia, where she was born to Bruce and Elizabeth Younger. She was the elder of two sisters, with her sister Ann having preceded her in death.
Beth’s early years were spent in Elon, Virginia, where she excelled academically, ultimately earning her Registered Nurse (RN) degree from the Lynchburg School of Nursing. After completing her education, she worked in the emergency room at Lynchburg Hospital until her marriage to Hannon Marshall Burford in 1952. The couple later relocated to Newport News, Virginia, where Hannon built a distinguished 45-year career as an engineer at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company.
In their new home, Beth focused on raising their two daughters, Ann Burford Jett and Elizabeth “Betsy” Burford Poulsen. As a devoted stay-at-home mother, she dedicated her time and energy to supporting her family while actively engaging in community service. In 1973, she returned to her nursing roots, serving as a school nurse at Booker, Baron, and Smith Elementary Schools, where she positively impacted the lives of countless students.
Following their retirement at age 62, Beth and Hannon embraced adventure, traveling extensively and making lasting memories together. After spending 53 cherished years in the Riverdale neighborhood of Hampton, they moved to The Chesapeake Retirement Home in Newport News in 2007. Here, they enjoyed independent living until Hannon’s transition into the Memory Support section of the facility, where Beth showcased her unwavering devotion by remaining by his side every day for three years.
Throughout her life, Beth was a pillar of community spirit. She served as the election chair at her local voting precinct and volunteered at the Charles Taylor Library. Her commitment to beautifying her neighborhood was evident through her active membership in the Riverdale Garden Club. Additionally, she dedicated decades to teaching sixth-grade Sunday School at First Presbyterian Church in Hampton, Virginia.
Beth is survived by her two daughters, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, five granddogs, and numerous friends who were touched by her kindness. The family extends their gratitude for the exceptional care provided by the staff at The Chesapeake, particularly Cathy, her favorite Certified Nursing Assistant, and Yvonne Bailey from Concierge Home Care, who offered loving support during her final months.
A service honoring Beth’s life will be held on August 23, 2025, at 14:00 in the Chesapeake Room at The Chesapeake Retirement Home, located at 955 Harpersville Road, Newport News. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of choice. Those wishing to leave online condolences may visit www.vacremationsociety.com.
