A pet chicken from Texas has officially secured the title of the world’s oldest living chicken, according to Guinness World Records. The chicken, named Pearl, reached the remarkable age of 14 years and 69 days at the time of her recognition. Sonya Hull, a resident of Little Elm, Texas, hatched Pearl in her personal incubator on March 13, 2011, and the record was confirmed on May 22, 2023.
Throughout her life, Pearl has defied expectations, as most Easter-Egger Hens typically live between five to eight years. Hull expressed her joy over Pearl’s achievement, stating, “She’s defied all odds.” As Pearl has aged, her mobility has decreased, leading her to spend most of her time in the family’s laundry room.
Hull noted that Pearl enjoys watching television and is welcomed into the living room whenever she wishes. “She likes to watch TV when she hears it on,” Hull explained. Pearl has also formed a bond with Hull’s elderly cat and the family’s new kitten, who occasionally sits beside her.
While Pearl’s egg production has slowed over the years, she laid an egg shortly after being named a Guinness World Record-holder. This significant milestone comes after the previous record-holder, an Illinois pet named Peanut, passed away on December 25, 2023, at the age of 21 years and 238 days.
Pearl’s story highlights not only her longevity but also the special bond between pets and their owners. Hull’s dedication to Pearl showcases the remarkable capabilities of animals and the joy they bring into our lives. The news has brought a sense of warmth and wonder, reminding many of the unique and often surprising stories that pets can inspire.
