RSVP has honored two exceptional volunteers, Walt Fisher and Perky Cohen, each of whom has dedicated an impressive 35 years of service to the organization. Their unwavering commitment to empowering others and strengthening the community has left a significant impact on numerous lives and on the organization itself.
Walt Fisher: A Legacy of Leadership and Service
For over three decades, Walt Fisher has been a cornerstone of RSVP’s mission. His extensive contributions include roles as a board member, Volunteer Executive Consultant (VEC), and financial advisor to partner agencies. Fisher’s professional background has been instrumental in guiding others toward financial stability and growth.
Among his many volunteer experiences, Fisher highlights his role in assisting a partner agency with financial restructuring as particularly fulfilling. He provided hands-on solutions that helped resolve critical challenges. His most cherished experience, however, was serving as RSVP’s board treasurer, where his financial acumen solidified the organization’s foundation for future growth.
One of Fisher’s proudest moments was playing a key role in hiring Michele Moll as RSVP’s executive director. He believes her leadership has significantly increased RSVP’s impact in the community. Although he has stepped back from active board service, Fisher continues to lend his expertise as an emeritus member.
Reflecting on his long tenure, Fisher stated, “RSVP finds the best placement for you. It lets people do something with their passions and desire to help their community. There is always someone out there who needs your skills.” For Fisher, volunteering has been more than just service; it has been a continuation of his professional journey, allowing him to apply his education and experience in new ways. His connection to RSVP also deepened his personal life, as his wife volunteers alongside him, creating shared experiences.
Perky Cohen: Creativity and Compassion in Action
Perky Cohen, like Fisher, has devoted 35 years to RSVP, embodying a family legacy of volunteerism. Inspired by her own challenges with dyslexia, she began her journey with RSVP as a reading specialist, determined to help children facing similar difficulties. Throughout her years with the organization, Cohen has developed curricula and provided support to adult learners through educational programs.
Cohen’s creativity extends beyond education; she is passionate about art and wood carving. Known for her positive attitude, she has always been willing to assist others in need. Her commitment manifests in her role at The Gallery at Rydal Park, where she supports local artists and encourages community members to explore their artistic talents.
“Volunteering lets you share your skills with people who are struggling,” Cohen explained. “RSVP gave me the tools to help others.” Visitors can experience her artistic contributions firsthand, as an upcoming exhibit will open with a reception on Saturday at 1:00 PM and will remain on display until January 2, 2026.
The reception will be held at Rydal Park, located at 1515 The Fairway, Abington Township, Montgomery County. Guests are encouraged to inquire at the main desk for directions to the gallery, which is open daily for public viewing.
A Shared Commitment to Service
Despite their distinct journeys, both Fisher and Cohen are united by a shared belief that everyone has something valuable to contribute. Through their involvement with RSVP, they have discovered meaningful ways to use their skills, forge connections, and effect lasting change within the community.
Their combined 70 years of dedication exemplify RSVP’s mission of innovation, empowerment, and sustainability. They serve as an inspiration for new generations of volunteers seeking to find their own purpose through service.
