Carolyn Whitmire, a beloved educator and active community member, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, at the age of 83, surrounded by her family. Known for her unwavering commitment to social justice and generous spirit, she leaves behind a legacy of kindness and advocacy.
Born on January 10, 1942, in Ukiah, California, Carolyn was raised in a close-knit family. She was the daughter of Joe and Stella Foutz and had a sister, Joan, and a brother, Calvert. Carolyn and Joan became charter members of the Dolphins swim club, showcasing their competitive spirit as part of the Ukiah High School swim team.
Following her high school years, Carolyn attended Humboldt State University. It was there that she met her husband, Fred Whitmire. The couple later settled in Eureka, where they spent most of their life together. Carolyn dedicated her career to education, working with Eureka City Schools. She passionately supported students across various programs, ensuring they reached their full potential.
Carolyn’s vibrant personality made her well-loved in her community. She was known for her curiosity about different cultures and her respect for diversity. Friends and family describe her as outgoing and generous, always willing to lend a helping hand. She often went out of her way to support others, embodying a spirit of selflessness.
Throughout her life, Carolyn demonstrated a strong commitment to social issues. She was particularly vocal in her advocacy for racial equality, standing firm in her beliefs even during challenging times. Her courage to fight for what was right inspired those around her.
In addition to her advocacy work, Carolyn had a variety of interests. She was a private pilot and an accomplished horsewoman, training her dogs for agility competitions. Known for her exceptional hosting skills, she frequently organized large gatherings for Fred’s colleagues and supporters at local colleges.
Carolyn is survived by her husband, Fred, their children, Deborah Davids (Peter) and Phillip Whitmire (Anna), and her grandchildren, Sebastian and Nathaniel Whitmire. She also had a special bond with Phillip Webb, whom she loved dearly.
Services to honor Carolyn will be held on August 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Russian River Cemetery District, located at 940 Low Gap Road, Ukiah, CA 95482. A lunch reception will follow at Left Coast Seafood Restaurant, 110 W. Standley St., Ukiah.
Additional services will take place on August 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at First Covenant Church, 2526 J St., Eureka, CA. Refreshments will be served following the service. The family welcomes all who wish to celebrate Carolyn’s life.
