Parents Celebrate the Joy of Quiet Time After Bedtime

In a candid reflection on the challenges of parenting, many individuals are finding solace in the moment when their children finally drift off to sleep. An anonymous contributor to the TODAY Parenting Confession portal recently shared that their favorite part of the day is precisely this—when the kids are asleep. This sentiment resonates with countless parents who experience the daily highs and lows of raising children.

While children can display defiant behaviors and create chaotic environments, their peaceful slumber often brings a much-needed reprieve. Michelle Yu, co-founder and CEO of Josie, a company dedicated to supporting working parents, emphasizes the duality of parenthood. “The best part of your day can be when your child goes to bed, and you finally have a chance to breathe and do something for yourself,” she explains. “AND you love the moments when they were awake. Why can’t they both be true?”

This perspective highlights a common theme among parents: the need to acknowledge and accept their feelings without guilt. The idea that it is possible to adore one’s children while also cherishing personal time resonates deeply in today’s fast-paced parenting landscape.

Allison Wiggin Paolisso, co-founder and COO of Josie, shares her own thoughts on this matter. “I love them so much. I literally would die for them—but you’re making me nuts, and I need you to go to bed,” she states. Her insights reflect a universal truth among parents, reinforcing that difficult days do not indicate one’s worth as a parent. “A bad day doesn’t make me a bad parent. A bad day makes me human,” she adds.

Josie offers coaching and resources for working parents, tackling the everyday challenges they face. Wiggin Paolisso notes that a recurring theme in her discussions with parents is the importance of self-compassion. “We’re all just doing the best we can and figuring it out,” she says. “I can love my kids, and I can also really like my quiet time without them.”

This acknowledgment of the complexities of parenthood encourages parents to embrace both their love for their children and their need for personal space. The quiet moments after bedtime can serve as an opportunity for reflection, relaxation, or even the chance to share a personal confession on platforms like the TODAY Parenting Confession page.

As parents continue to navigate the demands of family life, the message remains clear: it is entirely acceptable to cherish the moments of solitude that follow a long day of parenting. Embracing this duality can lead to a healthier mindset and a more balanced approach to the joys and challenges of raising children.
