Lee Roy Coup Jr., a beloved husband, father, and veteran, passed away peacefully at home on July 25, 2001, at the age of 86, surrounded by his devoted family. Born on November 19, 1938, in Pennsylvania, Coup dedicated his life to serving his country and his community.
Having served in the United States Navy for 24 years, Coup exemplified honor and commitment throughout his military career. After retiring from the Navy, he transitioned into a role as a mail carrier, working for an impressive 36 years at the Olive Branch and Broad Street post office. His work ethic and dedication to service left a lasting impact on those around him.
Coup’s character was defined by simplicity and integrity. He cherished his family above all else, serving as a guiding presence for generations. He is predeceased by his daughter, Michelle Coup, his son, David Coup, and seven siblings. His legacy continues through his loving wife, Mavis Williams Coup, and his sons, John Earl Coup (Karen) and Jason Lee Coup (Christina).
In addition to his immediate family, Coup is survived by his stepdaughter, Karen Kidd (Ray), and three bonus children, Mark Barker, Lance Barker (Michelle), and Teresa Sherman (Tim). He also leaves behind his sister, Sylvia Snyder, and fifteen grandchildren, including Chris, Justin, and Lydia, along with five great-grandchildren, who will fondly remember their grandfather. His dog, Chase, was also a loyal companion throughout his life.
Coup’s influence extended well beyond his immediate family, as he touched the lives of many extended relatives and friends. His warmth, wisdom, and unwavering steadiness made him a cherished figure in his community. Known for his hard work and quiet heroism, Lee Roy Coup Jr.’s life serves as a testament to dedication and love.
Services and Tributes
A graveside service will be held on August 15, 2025, at 10 AM at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Veterans Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, on August 1, 2025, from 6 PM to 7 PM. In accordance with Coup’s wishes, attendees are encouraged to dress casually.
