Mars Hill Bible clinched its second consecutive Class 3A football state championship, defeating Bayside Academy 28-14 at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama, on December 4, 2025. The victory marks the fourth state title for the Panthers in just eight years, solidifying their reputation as a powerhouse in high school football.
Hudson Higgins, the standout running back for Mars Hill, played a pivotal role in the championship game, rushing for 195 yards and scoring two touchdowns. His performance not only helped the team secure the title but also allowed him to even the scorecard with his older brother, Peyton Higgins, who also won two state championships during his time at Mars Hill.
“Our family is very competitive,” Hudson remarked after the game. “He’s always saying that he’s better than me, but I think I’m shiftier than he ever was.” The sibling rivalry continues as both brothers prepare for their next chapters in college football, with Peyton transitioning from running back to receiver at Troy University.
The championship game showcased the talent of both Hudson Higgins and Jaxon Penn, another key player for Mars Hill. Penn contributed significantly, rushing for 206 yards and scoring three touchdowns. Their combined efforts have established them as one of the best running back duos in Alabama’s high school football history.
Their father, Darrell Higgins, who serves as the head coach, expressed pride in his sons’ accomplishments. “We’ve worked hard as a family to build this program, and it’s great to see the boys succeed,” he stated. The family’s competitive nature often leads to spirited discussions around the dinner table, especially with another championship added to their legacy.
As Hudson prepares to take the field again as a college player, he reflected on his experience at Protective Stadium, where he has now achieved a perfect record. “Throughout the whole process, the coaches kept saying that this is still home. Now I’m 2-0 in this stadium, so I’m ready to continue that,” he said.
The Panthers’ victory not only underscores their dominance in Class 3A football but also sets the stage for continued family competition, as both brothers aim to make their mark in the collegiate ranks. As the season concludes, the excitement surrounding Mars Hill Bible’s future remains palpable among its supporters and the local community.
