Maureen A. Hilferty, a cherished matriarch from Glenolden, passed away on November 2, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on September 5, 1931, in Wallasey, Birkenhead County, United Kingdom, she was the daughter of the late John and Audrey (Gamet) Moore. Her passing has left a profound void in the hearts of her family and the community she touched.
Described as a strong presence with a sharp wit and a remarkable sense of humor, Maureen was known for her unwavering support as a mother. Her children often referred to her as a “Momma bear,” a testament to her caring and protective nature. She was not only a nurturing figure but also the family’s proudest cheerleader, celebrating their achievements with enthusiasm.
Maureen is survived by her seven children: Alan Hilferty, Lynn Davis, Edward Hilferty, Michael Hilferty, Andrew Hilferty, Maryanne Riggio, and Joseph (Ann) Hilferty. She also leaves behind a son-in-law, Joseph Shaffer; nine grandchildren, including Cathy, Marie, Michelle, and Michael; and three great-grandchildren, Brennan, Savannah, and Autumn.
Her legacy is further enriched by the memories shared with family and friends. Maureen’s warmth and thoughtfulness made her a beloved figure, providing comfort in times of pain and joy in moments of success.
Maureen was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Hilferty Sr.; her daughter, Maureen Shaffer; and two sons-in-law, Larry Davis and Nick Riggio. She also mourned the loss of her daughters-in-law, Martha Hilferty and Sandy Hilferty, as well as her sister, Bette Hartley.
A viewing for Maureen will take place on Thursday, November 6, 2025, from 10:00 to 10:45 AM at St. Gabriel Church located on Mohawk Avenue in Norwood. A Mass will follow at 11:00 AM, and burial will occur at the Ss Peter and Paul Cemetery in Springfield.
The Hilferty family expresses their gratitude to the hospital, rehabilitation, palliative care, and hospice teams for the compassionate care provided to their beloved mother. Their support during her final days was invaluable, and the family acknowledges the dedication of the healthcare professionals involved.
As the community gathers to remember Maureen, her spirit will undoubtedly live on through the love she shared and the lives she touched.
