The Clearwater County Historical Society will celebrate National Grandparents Day with an open house on Sunday, September 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Clearwater County History Center, located at 264 First Street. This annual event honors the contributions of grandparents and aims to strengthen the bonds between generations.
National Grandparents Day was established in 1978 when then-President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation designating the Sunday after Labor Day as a day to honor grandparents. September was chosen to represent the “autumn years” of life, emphasizing the wisdom and guidance that older generations can provide to younger ones.
During the open house, attendees can enjoy a variety of activities, including an informal classic car show and horse and wagon rides. The rides will take participants around Shevlin, offering a glimpse of historic locations that have shaped the community over the last century. Rides will depart from the museum at 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
In addition to the rides, guests will be treated to refreshments, including homemade ice cream in a bag, root beer floats, and brownie sundaes. The Clearwater County Historical Society encourages grandparents to bring their grandchildren along to the museum, where they can share stories and memories that bridge the generational gap.
For those who are not yet grandparents, the invitation extends to bring a grandparent or an older relative to enjoy the festivities. Admission to the event is free, making it accessible for families to participate in this meaningful celebration.
