Bob Sadler Creates “Arkansas Al” Scholarship for UA Little Rock Athletes

Bob Sadler has established the “Arkansas Al” Janssen Endowed Scholarship, a significant initiative aimed at supporting student-athletes at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. This scholarship, funded by a generous donation of $25,000, honors the legacy of Janssen, whose impactful presence in Little Rock Athletics spanned decades.

Honoring a Lifelong Legacy

“Arkansas Al” Janssen was well-known as a vibrant supporter of Trojan sports, serving as the energetic voice at baseball games and a passionate fan in the stands. Following his passing five years ago, Sadler felt a personal responsibility to keep Janssen’s legacy alive. He expressed his intention clearly: “When Al died, we wanted to set up a scholarship in his name. I didn’t want the legacy of our club to fade away,” he said.

The newly created Trojan Legion Club “Arkansas Al” Endowed Scholarship aims to assist student-athletes in achieving their educational aspirations while competing in their respective sports. Sadler, who has been a staunch supporter of the Trojan Legion Club, believes this scholarship will embody the spirit of camaraderie and dedication that Janssen exemplified.

Supporting Future Generations

With a vibrant history dating back to the early 1980s, the Trojan Legion Club is the largest and most established booster organization within Little Rock Athletics. Originally founded as the Tip-In Club to support basketball, it has since expanded to encompass all athletic programs, raising essential resources and fostering a sense of community among Trojan fans.

Sadler’s connection to Trojan athletics began during his early career when his employer, Entergy, sponsored his college night classes. He fondly recalls attending games for free, quickly developing a passion for live sports. “My first game was in the old gym,” he reminisced. “I was there when we beat Notre Dame and went to our first NCAA Tournament.”

Through the establishment of this scholarship, Sadler hopes to provide the necessary financial support that student-athletes require to focus on their education while competing at an elite level. “Hopefully this scholarship will help student-athletes get an education, which is the reason they’re really here,” he said.

The “Arkansas Al” Endowed Scholarship will ensure that Janssen’s spirit continues to inspire and support future generations of student-athletes at UA Little Rock, allowing them to pursue their academic and athletic goals with the backing of a robust community.
