Jones began his career after graduating from Princess Anne High School, where he showcased his musical talents by playing the trumpet and performing with the Madrigal Singers. Following high school, he completed a trade apprenticeship with E. Calagari & Sons. He volunteered as a police officer with the Chesapeake Auxiliary Police Unit during the 1970s and 1980s. His commitment to public safety was matched by his passion for music. Jones was an active member of several musical groups, including the Commodore Chorus and the Virginia Beach Chorale, where he continued to perform traditional and barbershop music.
Jones was also known for his warm spirit and camaraderie, especially during his decade-long tenure at Cavalier Mazda, where he built lasting friendships. His faith was an important aspect of his life, and he was a dedicated member of the Woodland Heights Baptist Church.
