Chicago officer shot on West Side; suspect in custody

Chicago News

CHICAGO — A Chicago police officer was shot on the city’s West Side and a suspect has been taken into custody, police said.

Officers responded to the scene of a domestic incident around 3:45 a.m. Wednesday near 13th and Lawndale in the Lawndale neighborhood.

Upon arriving to the scene, officers engaged in dialogue with the offender from the third floor, when the offender fired at an officer.

The 10th District officer was shot in the leg and transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition. He is expected to be OK, police said. A woman and child who were inside the home are doing OK.

Police said officers didn’t return fire and the suspect in custody is a felony gun offender.

No officers fired their weapons. An investigation is ongoing.

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown says this is the fourth officer hit by suspect gunfire in the last week.

“It just speaks to the courage, bravery and dedication of the Chicago Police Department and its officers during this unprecedented time and challenging time not only with the pandemic and civil unrest but also the push against police and yet our officers are continuing to risk everything to protect their city,” the superintendent said.

This is a developing story. Check back for details.
