State cases hit their peak May 12, with more than 4,000 daily confirmed cases, then even after the state moved into a new reopening phase, cases declined until mid-June, when the state saw two days with fewer than 500 confirmed cases. Since then, as cases surged in other states, the seven-day average number of cases in Illinois has been edging up and officials have been warning of the possibility of having to reimpose restrictions.
