A 29-year-old Chicago man was killed after crashing his vehicle into a building in Mount Pulaski early Saturday morning after evading a traffic stop.

The man, identified as Todd Walter, was killed after he crashed a 2020 Jeep Wrangler through the front overhead garage bay doors of Deppe Trucking and eventually into a parked semi truck.

According to the Logan County State’s Attorney’s office, a Logan County deputy observed Walter leaving Lincoln southbound on Illinois Route 121 at a speed in excess of the posted speed limit.

The deputy later observed Walter cross into the northbound lane while driving southbound. The deputy then pulled him over shortly after 4 a.m. But, once the deputy exited the squad car, the Jeep accelerated away, continuing on Route 121 until turning onto Vine Street in Mount Pulaski.

The deputy lost visual of the Jeep, but eventually observed a large cloud coming from the business the vehicle crashed into.

Walter, the only occupant of the vehicle, was trapped and had to be extricated. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
