Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) announced on March 15, 2024, that it had killed two Russian special service agents suspected of assassinating a fellow officer in Kyiv. The victim, SBU officer Ivan Voronych, was shot dead earlier in the week in what authorities characterized as a targeted killing, with the SBU attributing responsibility to Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB).
According to the SBU, the suspects, a man and a woman, attempted to evade capture following the assassination. However, Ukrainian law enforcement quickly located them in the Kyiv region. In a statement released on Sunday, SBU head Vasyl Malyuk detailed the operation: “As a result of covert investigative and active counterintelligence measures, the enemy’s lair was discovered.”
During the arrest, the suspects reportedly resisted, leading to an exchange of gunfire, during which they were eliminated. Malyuk, in a video recorded at the scene, emphasized, “The only prospect for the enemy on the territory of Ukraine is death!”
The SBU revealed that the agents were tasked with monitoring Voronych to determine his daily routine. Following this surveillance, they were directed to a safe house where a silenced pistol awaited them. The SBU plays a crucial role in Ukraine’s internal security and conducts sabotage operations against Russian forces. Notably, it was involved in a significant drone attack on Russian airfields last month, demonstrating its active role in the ongoing conflict.
Voronych’s assassination comes amid an escalation of Russian attacks on Ukraine, marking a troubling period in the ongoing war, which is now in its fourth year. This week alone witnessed the largest and second-largest drone assaults in the conflict, highlighting the intensified hostilities between the two nations.
As the situation develops, the implications of Voronych’s killing and the subsequent actions taken by the SBU underscore the high stakes involved in Ukraine’s security landscape, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict with Russia.
