During the holiday season, the Altru Health System in Grand Forks transforms into a welcoming space for patients and caregivers. Staff members are dedicated to enhancing the experience for those who find themselves in the hospital during this festive time. To achieve this, Altru employees organize special events, decorate the facility, and focus on providing exceptional patient care.
Creating a Sense of Community
Hundreds of employees at Altru work tirelessly to ensure that patients and their families receive the care they need, even as many people associate the holidays with rest and relaxation. Kortney Clarke, an intensive care unit nurse, emphasized that illness does not take a holiday. “People unfortunately do get sick during the holiday season, and they still deserve to be cared for,” she stated. Clarke described the atmosphere among the staff, noting that even while working during this time, they form a supportive “work family.”
To foster a sense of community and joy, Altru hosts several holiday-themed events. In November, the health system organizes a food drive to support patients in need. During Thanksgiving, a tree is placed in the hospital so that staff and patients can share what they are thankful for. Additionally, departments participate in an “adopt-a-family” program, donating gifts to brighten the season for those in need. Altru also holds a candlelight memorial service for families who have lost a child, offering support and remembrance.
Support for Staff and Patients Alike
While the focus on patient care remains paramount, Altru staff members prioritize supporting one another as well. Employees often swap shifts to accommodate personal commitments during the holidays. At Thanksgiving, a potluck is organized where each staff member brings a dish to share, enhancing camaraderie and making the holiday feel special for everyone involved. “We work really well with each other… We support staff to ensure that everyone gets work-life balance,” Caron explained.
To avoid repetitive holiday shifts, Altru plans its scheduling years in advance, ensuring that employees do not consistently work during the same holidays. Ken Hanson, senior marketing and communications specialist at Altru, noted that staff members receive “holiday premiums” as an acknowledgment of their commitment. “In health care, patient needs don’t pause for holidays, and staffing is critical every day of the year,” he said. “Working on a holiday means time away from family traditions and personal rest.”
Despite the extra effort to create a festive atmosphere, the quality of patient care remains constant throughout the year. Caron highlighted the dedication of Altru staff, stating, “Helping our patients and caring for our community is really who we are, and this shines even brighter during the holiday season.”
The initiatives at Altru Health System reflect not only a commitment to patient care but also a strong sense of community among staff and patients alike. In doing so, they ensure that even those spending the holidays in a hospital feel a sense of warmth and belonging.
