Former President Donald Trump described a recently published letter he allegedly sent to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein for Epstein’s 50th birthday as a “dead issue.” In an interview with NBC News on Tuesday, Trump stated, “I don’t comment on something that’s a dead issue. I gave all comments to the staff. It’s a dead issue.”
This statement marked Trump’s first public response since the House Oversight Committee’s Democratic members released an image of the 2003 letter. The document reportedly reflects a conversation between Trump and Epstein, suggesting that they had “certain things in common.” The message concludes with a somewhat cryptic line: “A pal is a wonderful thing. Happy Birthday—and may every day be another wonderful secret.”
The Wall Street Journal previously reported in July that the letter was written as a birthday gift for Epstein. Trump has since denied authorship of the letter and has pursued legal action against the publication for disseminating it.
Some officials within the White House and Trump supporters have raised questions regarding the authenticity of the signature on the letter. Karoline Leavitt, the press secretary, asserted on Monday, “As I have said all along, it’s very clear President Trump did not draw this picture, and he did not sign it.” She further emphasized that Trump’s legal team would continue to “aggressively pursue litigation” regarding the matter.
Trump’s comments and the ongoing controversy around the letter have reignited discussions about his past associations, particularly with Epstein, who was arrested in 2019 on federal charges of sex trafficking. The current situation underscores the complexities of Trump’s political landscape as he navigates the public’s scrutiny over his previous relationships and statements.
