The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade returns this Sunday, October 29, 2023, in New York City’s East Village, celebrating its 35th anniversary. The event promises an entertaining day for dog lovers and their furry companions, featuring new elements, including a special group of Grand Marshals—five adoptable dogs from local rescue organizations such as PupStarz, Social Tees, and the ASPCA.
Fern Watt, founder of the nonprofit organization behind the parade, New York Dog Parade, expressed excitement about this year’s festivities. “It’s going to be very cute. And we’ve got some other surprises in store to kick off the parade,” she stated. The parade will take place along Avenue B, stretching from 11th to 7th Streets, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Approximately 1,200 dog owners have registered to participate with their costumed pets. A panel of three judges will evaluate the costumes and select 20 finalists for the annual costume contest. The ultimate winner will receive a supply of dog food from sponsor Stella & Chewy’s and a gift card to Tompkins Square Bagels. Watt noted, “We didn’t want the dog to be the only one getting a tasty treat, because we know humans also put in a lot of work into these beautiful costumes.”
Although registrations for the costume contest have sold out, the parade is free for spectators, who are encouraged to come out and support the participants along the route. Dogs that come to watch will also be treated to goodies, ensuring that every attendee, whether on two legs or four, enjoys the festivities.
As the parade marks a significant milestone in its history, it continues to foster community spirit and promote dog adoption while providing a delightful experience for all involved. The combination of fun, creativity, and charitable efforts makes the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade a beloved tradition in New York City.
