Netflix will remove five notable superhero films from its platform starting January 2026, as part of a broader strategy to refresh its catalog. These titles include popular entries from both DC and Marvel, reflecting the streaming service’s ongoing shift in programming.
Leaving the Platform
According to a report by What’s On Netflix, the films scheduled for removal include Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which was released in theatres in 2023. This film, featuring Jason Momoa, served as the final installment in the now-defunct DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Unfortunately, it did not achieve the same critical acclaim or box office success as its predecessor, collecting only $440 million globally, as noted by Box Office Mojo.
Another significant title exiting Netflix is Blue Beetle, which debuted in 2023 and stars Xolo Maridueña as the titular hero. This film introduced a beloved character to the DCEU, but it will soon be unavailable for streaming.
The list of departing films also includes two entries from Marvel: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and Hulk. Neither of these films is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Ang Lee’s Hulk marked the character’s first full-length big-screen appearance, while Spirit of Vengeance was the second and final film in the Ghost Rider franchise, produced by Sony Pictures.
Completing the lineup of superhero films leaving Netflix is Kick-Ass 2, which continues the story of the unconventional superhero team.
Other Titles at Risk
In addition to the superhero films, Netflix is set to remove more than 100 titles from its library next month. Some notable films that will no longer be available include 8 Mile, Doctor Sleep, Hancock, Terminator 2, and Mad Max: Fury Road.
This significant reduction in available titles highlights Netflix’s strategy to continuously update its offerings and cater to evolving viewer preferences. As new content rolls in, subscribers will need to act quickly to watch these departing films before they are gone for good.
