Legendary actress Dame Judi Dench has revealed that her eyesight has deteriorated significantly due to a medical condition, leaving her unable to recognize faces. In a recent interview with ITV News, the 86-year-old actress candidly shared the impact of her diagnosis of macular degeneration (AMD), a progressive condition that affects central vision.
During the interview, Dench stated, “I can’t recognize anybody now,” explaining that her vision issues have led her to withdraw from appearing on camera. When asked why she no longer participates in film projects, she responded, “Because I can’t see anymore.” Her diagnosis, which she received in 2012, has progressively worsened over the years.
Dench’s longtime friend and fellow actor, Sir Ian McKellen, who joined her for the interview, attempted to lighten the mood by saying, “But we can see you.” Dench humorously acknowledged this, admitting that she can only see the “outline” of McKellen because she knows him well.
The Oscar-winning actress elaborated on her struggles, saying, “It’s because I can’t see. I can’t see the television, and I can’t see to read.” McKellen added a touch of levity by joking about how Dench sometimes greets strangers with, “It’s lovely to see you again,” to which she responded with laughter, confirming that it happens occasionally.
When the topic of theatre arose, Dench stated that she is not currently active in that realm either, saying, “Well, no.” Despite her challenges, McKellen praised Dench’s remarkable talent, calling her “a great actor on top of everything else.” Dench expressed her affection for McKellen, stating, “I adore him, and the memory of him being here.”
The two actors share a rich history, having starred together in the Royal Shakespeare Company production of Macbeth in 1976. Now, five decades later, they have reunited to promote a new initiative aimed at enhancing Shakespeare education in schools, showcasing their enduring commitment to the arts.
Dench’s openness about her condition sheds light on the realities of living with vision impairment, and her spirit remains strong as she navigates these challenges. The heartfelt exchange between her and McKellen reflects not only their deep friendship but also the resilience that characterizes their legendary careers in the performing arts.
