The director of *The Witcher 3*, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, has expressed confidence about launching his next role-playing game, *The Blood of Dawnwalker*, despite the impending release of *Grand Theft Auto 6*. In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Tomaszkiewicz stated that he is not overly concerned about competing against what many perceive to be one of the biggest video game releases in history.
While the gaming industry has seen several developers adjust their release schedules to avoid overlap with *GTA 6*, Tomaszkiewicz maintains a different perspective. He noted that many in the industry are closely monitoring Rockstar’s upcoming title, recognizing its substantial marketing and popularity. “This is the massive game with massive marketing and so on,” he remarked. “As a player, I’m fine with it. I will play for sure. As a developer, it’s also fine. We’ll see.”
Developers from various studios have showcased a palpable fear regarding *GTA 6*. Reports have highlighted how games like *Hollow Knight: Silksong*, *Clover Pit*, and *Demonschool* have shifted their release dates to avoid direct competition. An industry analyst even suggested that launching a game against *GTA 6* could be akin to “suicide.” Meanwhile, the CEO of *Helldivers 2* stated that *GTA 6* will “blot out the sun in a way that is unimaginable for the rest of us.”
Despite this overwhelming sentiment, Tomaszkiewicz’s approach reflects a sense of resilience. His studio, Rebel Wolves, plans to launch *The Blood of Dawnwalker* in 2024. He emphasized that the studio’s effectiveness is not diminished by its smaller size compared to larger teams. “We are more effective than bigger teams,” he asserted, indicating a commitment to maintaining the studio’s current scale.
This perspective highlights a shift in how some developers view competition in the gaming landscape. While larger titles can dominate conversations, smaller studios like Rebel Wolves aim to carve out their niche by focusing on creativity and quality.
Tomaszkiewicz’s confidence and willingness to embrace the challenges presented by larger competitors suggest that the gaming community may benefit from a diverse array of titles, regardless of major releases. As the landscape evolves, developers who remain steadfast in their vision may find success even amidst the shadows of gaming giants.
