Starbucks Workers Plan Urgent Strike on Red Cup Day, Nov. 13

UPDATE: Starbucks unionized workers are gearing up to strike on November 13, coinciding with the coffee giant’s annual Red Cup Day, if a labor contract is not finalized. The announcement from Starbucks Workers United comes after a staggering 92% of union members voted in favor of the strike, reflecting escalating tensions between workers and management.

This strike threatens to disrupt operations at Starbucks locations across 25 U.S. cities, significantly impacting the company during one of its busiest promotional events. Union representatives emphasized that failure to finalize a contract within the week will trigger the walkout, marking the third national work stoppage in just over a year.

“We’re ready to fight for a fair contract,” stated Michelle Eisen, a union spokesperson and barista. The union’s push for better pay and more flexible hours has reached a critical juncture, with negotiations stalled since April 2024. Starbucks has yet to deliver a satisfactory offer, prompting the union’s decisive move.

Starbucks currently employs approximately 240,000 workers across North America, with 9,500 represented by the union. While negotiations have seen 33 tentative agreements, most address non-economic issues, leaving core demands for pay increases and better working conditions unaddressed.

Union leaders are calling for a 65% immediate pay increase and a total of 77% over three years. They also seek additional compensation for shifts near opening or closing times, during promotional events, and on weekends.

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol expressed disappointment at the union’s decision to authorize a strike rather than return to negotiations. He maintains that Starbucks offers competitive wages and benefits, stating, “We already give them the best job in retail.” However, baristas like Jasmine Leli argue that current pay levels are insufficient to make ends meet, calling for improvements to ensure Starbucks jobs are genuinely the best in retail.

With just days remaining until the potential strike, all eyes are on Starbucks as the coffee chain faces mounting pressure from its workers. The outcome of this tense standoff will have significant implications for the company and its employees as the holiday season approaches.
