UPDATE: Voters in Genesee County, MI, have just approved crucial funding proposals for three school districts during the election held on November 4, 2023. The results are set to significantly impact the infrastructure and educational environments in the regions of Atherton, Davison, and Goodrich.
In a closely watched ballot, Atherton Community Schools secured approval for a $13.4 million building and site bond proposal aimed at revitalizing aging facilities. The proposal passed with a narrow margin of 465 yes votes (52.19%) against 426 no votes (47.81%), according to unofficial results from the Genesee County Clerk’s Office. Superintendent Tina Case emphasized the urgent need for updates: “The buildings are older and need updating in order to maintain a safe and productive environment for all students and staff.” The bond will result in a 1-mill net increase for residents, translating to an additional $1 for every $1,000 of taxable property value.
Meanwhile, Davison Community Schools successfully renewed their sinking fund millage, which has faced previous challenges. With 3,865 votes (59.81%) in favor and 2,597 votes (40.19%) against, this renewal will maintain the existing 1.3497-mill levy for another decade, from 2026 through 2035. Superintendent Matt Lobban noted that the renewal will not include expanded uses that led to confusion in a past proposal. The funds, generating approximately $1.4 million annually, are essential for major maintenance and improvement needs.
Additionally, Goodrich Area Schools achieved a significant victory with the approval of a $64 million infrastructure bond renewal. The vote yielded 1,535 yes votes (53.82%) against 1,317 no votes (46.18%), with some precincts in Lapeer County showing mixed results. Superintendent Michael Baszler reassured residents that the bond represents a renewal with no tax increase, stating, “The current millage rate stays the same, so it’s a renewal.” This funding will address critical infrastructure needs estimated at $90 million across the district.
These approvals reflect a strong community commitment to improving educational environments and ensuring that all students have access to quality facilities. The impact of these decisions will reverberate throughout the districts, enhancing learning conditions and addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges.
As these districts prepare to implement the approved proposals, officials will begin determining timelines for the necessary improvements. The urgency of these upgrades cannot be overstated, as they are essential for maintaining safe and effective learning spaces for students and staff alike.
Stay tuned for further updates as these developments unfold in Genesee County’s schools.
