Bergenfield Bears Triumph 14-7 in Emotional Senior Day Win

UPDATE: Bergenfield High School football celebrated a remarkable Senior Day victory, defeating Paterson Eastside 14-7 in a gripping match on October 18, 2025. This win marks a significant emotional milestone for the team, following a tumultuous season filled with challenges.

Just five months ago, the Bergenfield football program faced tragedy with the loss of former head coach Rob Violante in a devastating car accident. Stepping into this difficult role, first-year head coach Joe Lapi, a former player under Violante, has expertly navigated the emotional landscape, leading his team to their proudest moment of the season.

In front of a supportive home crowd, the Bears showcased a powerful ground game led by sophomore Shamiere Duncan, who rushed for 117 yards and scored a touchdown. The team jumped to an early 14-0 lead, with Duncan’s rushing prowess complemented by a touchdown pass from junior quarterback Xavier Valdez to senior Zander Velez.

The game began with excitement as Bergenfield’s offense showcased its strength, but not without moments of tension. Despite an early fumble in the end zone, Duncan rebounded with determination, stating, “I had to remember it was about the next play… I really love running behind my offensive line.” His performance proved vital to the Bears’ success.

Defensively, the Bears were relentless, limiting Paterson Eastside’s offense to just 5-for-15 on third and fourth downs. Senior Lemar Lumsden, who made a triumphant return to the team after missing last season, capped off the game with a crucial sack, solidifying the Bears’ hard-fought victory. Lapi praised Lumsden’s leadership and dedication, saying, “He’s the type of leader any team would want.”

The emotional weight of the day was palpable, as Lapi reflected on the significance of the win, stating, “It felt like a win for an entire community today.” Players and fans alike honored Coach Violante’s memory, with Duncan emphasizing, “I wanted to show out at home for Coach V today.”

This victory improves Bergenfield’s record to 3-5 for the season, igniting hope for a strong finish. With upcoming games against Teaneck, Dwight-Morrow, and Tenafly, the Bears aim to end the season on a five-game win streak, which would secure their first winning season since 2019.

As the team moves forward, the impact of Coach Violante’s legacy continues to resonate, shaping the culture and spirit of Bergenfield football. The Bears look to carry this momentum into their next challenges, driven by the unity and resilience forged through adversity.

Keep an eye on the Bears as they continue their journey, with their sights set on not just winning games, but also honoring the memory of a beloved coach who inspired them all.
