UPDATE: In a thrilling new development, Borderlands 4 has just introduced an exciting sidequest titled “Forgive Me,” which humorously references the beloved Soulsborne games. This unexpected addition is generating significant buzz among fans and gamers alike, reinforcing the series’ commitment to clever storytelling.
The quest, inspired by a viral meme originally tweeted by Borderlands 4 head writer Sam Winkler in 2022, centers on a parody of Soulsborne storytelling. Winkler clarified that his intention was not to criticize FromSoftware but rather to celebrate the genre, stating,
“I am begging anyone who thinks I’m dunking on fromsoft to learn how to make fun of the things you love.”
This lighthearted approach is a refreshing shift for the franchise, which faced backlash for its reliance on toilet humor in the previous installment, Borderlands 3.
The “Forgive Me” quest begins in a cave located in the Cuspid Climb area of the Terminus Ranges. Players will encounter a waterfall cascading from a giant skull at the entrance, setting the stage for an adventure filled with dark humor and challenging encounters. Once inside, gamers will battle a “badass psycho” who drops a unique item called the Desecrated Bolt, igniting the quest with the mysterious words, “Zanzibart… forgive me.” Players are then tasked with finding Zanzibart’s resting place, adding an element of mystery.
To continue the quest, players must navigate to another cave in the Stoneblood Forest, further north. Here, they will face off against the formidable Cursed Myrmidon of the Cruel Dawn. After the battle, players will be treated to a lengthy monologue from Vycarias, the Lore-Singer, who dives into a rich narrative about the game’s lore, including references to the Shatterglass Plain and the Nevergreen. This moment has been praised for its depth and the voice actor’s impressive delivery, showcasing the developers’ commitment to storytelling.
As Borderlands 4 continues to evolve, the development team is focused on redeeming the series’ narrative and character depth. They aim to create a more serious tone compared to its predecessor, with writers noting, “If I tried to put a meme in the game, he would come to my house with a baseball bat.” This reflects a desire to bring back a sense of dread surrounding the game’s villains, enhancing overall engagement with the story.
The introduction of the “Forgive Me” sidequest has not only excited fans but also sparked discussions about the future of Borderlands 4. Players are eager to see how additional sidequests and DLC will expand on the game’s humor and narrative intricacies.
Stay tuned for more updates on Borderlands 4 as developers continue to unveil new content and features that enhance gameplay and storytelling.
