BREAKING: New York Mets pitcher Tylor Megill has officially undergone Tommy John surgery, as confirmed by manager Carlos Mendoza just hours before the Mets’ crucial three-game series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field commenced. The surgery took place in Los Angeles on Monday, and it is anticipated that Megill will miss the entirety of the 2026 season.
“This is a tough blow for him and for the team,” Mendoza stated. “You feel for the individual. It’s going to be a while before he takes the mound again. Wishing him a quick recovery.”
Megill, 30, has been sidelined since June 14, when he struggled against Tampa Bay, allowing six runs in just 3.2 innings. Following that performance, he was placed on the 15-day injured list on June 17 due to an elbow sprain, later transitioning to the 60-day IL on July 8.
In his time on the mound this season, Megill posted a 5-5 record with a 3.95 ERA over 14 starts. His absence is particularly felt as the Mets’ rotation, which was once ranked fourth in the majors with a 3.38 ERA prior to the All-Star break, has plummeted to 24th with a 5.10 ERA since then.
Fans and teammates alike are feeling the impact of this setback. Mendoza expressed the challenge ahead: “Obviously we’ll miss him, when you’re talking about depth. So unfortunate, but our job right now is to get him back on the field as quick as possible.”
Megill, who has spent his entire career with the Mets since being drafted in the eighth round in 2018, now faces a lengthy recovery. He had recently attempted a rehab assignment in August, making six appearances before being shut down due to renewed tightness in his elbow.
As the Mets enter Tuesday’s game tied with the Cincinnati Reds for the final wild-card slot in the National League, this latest news adds to the urgency of their playoff aspirations. The team will need to rally and fill the void left by Megill as they strive for postseason contention.
Stay tuned for further updates on Megill’s recovery and the Mets’ performance in the coming weeks.
