Howard “Moe” Oliver Saunders, Jr., a respected member of the community and successful businessman, passed away in his home on September 15, 2025. He was 90 years old and is remembered for his contributions to both his family and his community.
Born in the Larchmont area of Norfolk, Howard was the son of Howard O. Saunders and Capitola Aydelotte Saunders. He attended Maury High School and later pursued higher education at Randolph Macon College. Following his academic pursuits, Howard served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, reflecting his commitment to his country.
Business Ventures and Community Involvement
Alongside his late wife, Barbara Saunders, Howard founded Saunders Business Systems, Inc., which became a cornerstone of their family legacy. Their entrepreneurial spirit not only fostered a successful business but also allowed them to contribute significantly to their community.
Howard was actively involved in various organizations, serving as a member of Churchland Baptist and the Portsmouth Host Lions Club. His dedication to community service extended to his role on the Board of the Taylor Bend YMCA, where he worked to promote health and fitness initiatives.
Howard is survived by his two sons, Howard Kent Saunders (Pamela) and Robert Saunders (Valerie), along with six grandchildren: Christina (Chris), Michael (Taylor), Matthew, Andrew, Jessica, and Hannah. He also leaves behind two great-grandsons, Bryce and Ryan.
